5 Best Chapped Lips Tips: Give your lips some love!

by jess | Skincare

It often seems like there’s no time of year that is great for avoiding dried out, chapped lips. In the winter, they’re dry and wind-chilled. In the summer, they’re sunburned. In the fall and spring, they can be dehydrated. Stocking up on lip balm seems like the simplest solution when combating dry, cracked lips, but’s it’s not the only—or even most effective—remedy. Show your lips some love and try one or all of these easy chapped lip cures:

5 Tips for Chapped Lips

  1. Before washing your face, apply a lip balm to protect your lips from your facial cleanser that may actually be drying out your lips. Both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide found in most facial cleansers disrupt your pH balance and can cause lips to dehydrate.
  2. Use a lip exfoliator! Exfoliating will remove the dry or dead skin cells. After exfoliating, the lips look fresher and smoother. But don’t forget, you must moisturize your lips after scrubbing!
  3. Use sunscreen to prevent burned, chapped lips. Even in the dead of winter, the lips are vulnerable to sun damage. This will also help prevent those pesky lips wrinkles that can set in as we age.
  4. The oldest trick in the book—petroleum jelly. This ointment will work as sealant to lock in moisture to prevent further drying.
  5. It might seem obvious, but don’t bite/lick/peel your lips! We often times lick our dry lips to add some moisture, but this actually has the exact opposite effect. Saliva contains acids that break down food, but they also dry out your lips. Plus, continuously licking will remove the natural oils you have on your lips.
